I mentioned previously that I'm going to be taking part in ds106, a free and open online course on digital storytelling curated (he hates to be called the leader) by Jim Groom. Tom Woodward has already put out some excellent assignment examples. Having a background as graphic designer is pushing me more towards design-themed assignments, but I'm looking forward to stretching myself in a number of ways. Here are some ideas I've come up with (a lot images via LaughingSquid):
Big Caption
In the spirit of this Tumblr blog take any photo featured on The Big Picture and add typographical text elements in a way that changes the message.#### Iconic Identities
How many elements can you remove from a design and still have it be recognizable. This theme can be pretty broad, other examples incude Minimalist Star Wars Posters and Travel Posters for Comic Book Locations. #### DaVinci invents the Kitchen Sink
Tell a story by breaking it down into the common elements and themes and recreating it as a sketch. #### What The Font?
A common exercise in design school, take typographical elements (perhaps even the words of a story) and bring them to life.
